Sometime back the cinema "Periyar" was given tax exemption and grant of about 90 lakh to the producer by the state govt. Tax payers money is being given to a picture of a politician whose views were not entirely welcome by the people, cannot be appreciated.
Kamalhasan once told that he wld produce a film on Barathiar and he will act as Barathiar.
He has further said, that he would tell all about the successes, struggles and weakness of Barathiar in his film including that Barathiar smoked Kanja! Nobody cared his remarks about Barathiar. He was also not able to produce that film. Perhaps no gullible producer avilable.
But my point is, in the film Periyar, Periyar's mistakes and the views that were not accepted by the people and the opposite views were not shown.
Periyar was against Ambedkar. Periyar was against the Constitution of India (which is why Bharat Ratna was not given to him, though he always supported the ruling party) He preached that the Constitution was written by Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyengar and the Constituion drafting committee never met. He said the constitution was hotch-potch of American and Canadian and British Constitution. He attacked Ambedkar in many an unequivocal terms.
He declared the Republic day as a Black Day and tried to burn the constitution.
Once in a public platform he asked all the women spectators to raise their hands, if they are really chaste! All of them raise their hands. When they raised their hands he said " you look towards the sky and ask it to rain ". When they laughed and yelled he said, it was all written in the Thirukkural. He also suggested them not to teach Thirukkural to their wards.
Have these views been shown in the Periyar film! Periyar was a controversial leader. The only good thing about him he never aspired Power and fought elections. He was just blobbing his way, whether you accept it or not. That was all there was to it.
